Local Jeweler Receives Renowned Certification from Jewelers of America

New York, NY – Jewelers of America (JA), the national trade association for businesses serving the fine jewelry marketplace, has awarded Samantha Murray, Manager of Fernbaugh's Diamonds & Fine Jewelry in Plymouth, IN, the JA Certified Senior Sales Professional (CSSP) designation – the highest level of the Jewelers of America Professional Sales Certification program.

“Being a Jewelers of America Certified Senior Sales Professional is an important designation; it shows you can buy with confidence from this jewelry professional,” says Jewelers of America President & CEO David J. Bonaparte. “There is a fundamental difference between a JA Certified Senior Sales Professional and someone who just happens to make or sell jewelry. Samantha Murray has demonstrated her commitment to provide superior service and the ability to confidently handle customers’ jewelry needs.”

The Jewelers of America Professional Sales Certification program evaluates the facts, processes, procedures, terms and concepts that jewelry sales associates encounter in their daily work, and to be certified, the candidate must demonstrate proficiency in each skill to an acceptable national standard. By evaluating retail jewelry professionals according to nationally recognized standards, Jewelers of America Professional Certification formally recognizes an individual’s standing in the field of jewelry sales and shows that customers can trust the skills and knowledge of the certified jewelry sales professional. To achieve Senior Sales certification, Murray first passed the JA Certified Sales Professional (CSP) exam.

Samantha stared with Fernbaugh’s in 2007 as a sales clerk. Over the years she has gained hands on experience and now manages the sore for Lori and Brian. Samantha has attended numerous seminars in the jewelry industry and is continuing her education through Gemological institute of America and Jewelers of America courses.

fernbaughs jewelers rjo show

Plymouth, IN, December 01, 2015 --(PR.com)-- It might sound a bit trite to describe a local jewelry store as a “Community Gem,” but in the case of Fernbaugh’s Diamonds & Fine Jewelry, the description is a perfect match. For nearly 83 years, customers of Fernbaugh’s have shopped stylish and inspired selections of sparkling diamonds, colored stones, detailed gold, perfect bridal sets, unique birthday gifts, anniversary bangles, and more.

Established in 1933 by Earl and Geraldine Fernbaugh as a jewelry repair shop, the business quickly grew into a jewelry store featuring an in-house repair shop. With the passing of Earl Fernbaugh, the store operated under the management of Alvin Scheerer, Florence Sutton and Oris McGuire. Lori VanDuyne, and son-in-law Brian VanDuyne bought the stylish Plymouth location at 206 North Michigan Street in February, 2006.

United Way of Marshall County announces diamond winner at Fernbaugh's Jewelry

PLYMOUTH - The United Way of Marshall County is pleased to announce Angie Stults won the 1/2 carat diamond from Fernbaugh's Diamonds and Fine Jewelry in support of the annual campaign.

"Brian VanDuyne, owner of Fernbaugh's Diamonds and Fine Jewelry, called me with a great fundraising idea" said Jennifer Maddox, executive director. "He proposed providing the United Way with a 1/2 carat diamond and 499 1/2 carat zirconias. Each cubic zirconia (CZ) would be placed individually in small plastic bags and sold for $2 each. He would add the real diamond among the bags. After all the "diamonds" were sold, purchasers could go to Fernbaugh's to find out if they actually had the real diamond. I thought this was a great idea and another great partnership for our United Way."

The first "diamonds" were sold Saturday. Oct 25 in front of Fernbaugh's store during the annual trick or treat event. Sales continued through the following week. All the "diamonds" were sold by November first. Then the waiting began for the real diamond to show up in the store.

Winner Angie Stults admits she borrowed the money to buy five diamonds from United Way executive director Jennifer Maddox. "I attended a meeting of women investors sponsored by Edward Jones where Jennifer offered the opportunity to purchase a "diamond". When I told her I didn't have any cash with me, she offered to loan me the money. I'm sure glad she did!?

Diamond Winner

After Angie purchased her "diamonds" they sat on her desk at Edward Jones for two weeks. When she heard WTCA Radio announce the winner had not yet come forward she thought she might as well go over to Fernbaugh's to have her "diamonds" checked. "Imagine my surprise when they told me I had the real diamond!" Angie exclaimed.

The fundraising event contributed $1,019 to the annual campaign. "For a first time event, we were pleased to have been able to give the United Way over a thousand additional dollars this year. Especially in this tough economy, " said Brian VanDuyne. Fernbaugh's is located at 206 N. Michigan St in downtown Plymouth.

The United Way of Marshall County advances the common good by focusing on the building blocks to a good life: income, education and health. When we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all. That's what it means to Live United.

JEWELRY ARTIST TO APPEAR AT FERNBAUGH’S WITH ORGANIC COLLECTION

Patricia Daunis

LOGANSPORT & PLYMOUTH, Indiana – Nationally acclaimed East Coast jewelry designer, Patricia Daunis, will introduce her unique handmade collection at Fernbaugh’s Diamonds & Fine Jewelry Wednesday - Saturday, October 10 – 13, appearing in Logansport Wednesday and Thursday and in Plymouth Friday and Saturday.

“This one-woman show is an ideal opportunity to meet the designer in person and to see and touch her newest 14K gold and sterling silver artistic creations,” states owner Lori VanDuyne. “We’re pleased to host this elite treasure chest of a show for our clients and the general public as the holiday season approaches,” she continues, who are welcome to bring in favorite pieces they no longer wear for a redesign.

A visit to Ms. Daunis’ website, daunis.com, reveals her belief, “Jewelry is an art form and it should be in harmony with the wearer. I am influenced by Maine’s fluctuating coastal waters and the tranquility of lakes and streams. A close look at my designs and you can see the reflected light on waves and swirling eddies. I design so this movement of light and form will enhance the person who wears my jewelry.”

Sculptural earrings, ring bands and multi stone rings in gold or sterling, co-coordinating bracelets and pendants and necklaces, and whimsical pins for the light of heart in metals accented with colored gems make up her collection. “It’s like playing dress-up. We get all the jewelry out and play…just like we did when we were little girls and got into our mother’s jewelry…it’s a lot of fun,” Ms. Daunis affirms.

Speaking of mothers, Patricia also will have with her the Daunis Collection of Family Jewelry. People can come in and with the aid of a specialized computer program work with Daunis to create a family ring, pendant, or bracelet design using the family’s birthstones. “These are so wonderful. Each a one-of-a-kind design, because every family is a one-of-a-kind,” explains Patricia.

Daunis has received the DeBeers Diamonds Today award, two First Prize awards from the World Gold Council, Jewelers of America Jewel Award, and numerous Accent Magazine and other industry awards.

To schedule an appointment for a personalized design consultation with Patricia Daunis during her limited engagement at Fernbaugh’s, call before October 1, (547) 753-4827 in Logansport or 574-936-1577 in Plymouth. Fernbaugh’s hours are Tuesday – Friday 9-6 and Saturday 9-3. Visit fernbaughs.com.

FERNBAUGH’S DIAMONDS & FINE JEWELRY ANNOUNCES FATHER’S DAY UGLY TIE CONTEST WINNER

PLYMOUTH, Indiana - Fernbaugh’s Ugly Tie contest contrasted greatly with the beautiful weather this Father’s Day – a national holiday since 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson signed a proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday of June as such. The second annual event followed on the coattails of a most successful Mother’s Day celebration. “Honoring dads and moms within the community is important to us,” states owner Lori VanDuyne. “We like to involve family members in the fun of our contests while seriously acknowledging and appreciating deserving folks,” she continues.

Quite self explanatory, this year’s Ugly Tie lucky winner is Plymouth resident Randy Bowser who received a stylish Bulova watch valued at $275 plus a generous $100 gift certificate toward the purchase of a new shirt and tie. Thanks to his daughter Emily, who spotted the tie in his closet, the entry was chosen by the pubic as ‘ugliest’ among several submissions numbered and displayed in Fernbaugh’s front show window.

Store manager Kris Fawley laughs, “It still had the original price tag of $5 on it.” She says, “Such a contest is a lot of fun for everyone. Wives and children are the ones that select the ties. Their thoughts of what is deemed acceptable and stylish often differ from that of their father or husband.” When asked, Kris reassures, “The dads are very good natured about their ties - often generating stories of when and where they were worn.”

Fernbaugh’s mission is to celebrate special moments and establish meaningful relationships through exceptional customer service as well as continual community dedication. Lori’s husband Brian VanDuyne remarks, “How better to get to know our neighbors than through this light-hearted interaction for Father’s Day?”

Friendly, welcoming, and stylish, Fernbaugh’s specializes in classic and contemporary jewelry, as well as in-house repair and restoration. The family business is owned and operated by Derek McGuire and Brian and Lori VanDuyne who provide pick-up and delivery service on all items. Business hours are Tuesday – Friday 9-6 and Saturday 9-3.

FERNBAUGH’S DIAMONDS & FINE JEWELRY ANNOUNCES 2nd ANNUAL MOTHER’S DAY CONTEST WINNERS

LOGANSPORT & PLYMOUTH, Indiana - Fernbaugh’s Diamonds & Fine Jewelry, with locations in downtown Plymouth and Logansport, has hit upon a very popular contest: honoring deserving moms in celebration of Mother’s Day. “Because last year’s contest was so successful, we created another one this year,” stated owner Lori VanDuyne.” It was easy to play off of our featured Mother’s Knot Necklace and challenge people to enter with “My Mother’s Knot…..” written statements that took a round-about way, either humorous or serious, of complimenting these special women.”

Seventeen winners were chosen between the two locations, and the lucky moms each received a prize Mother’s Knot Necklace valued at $99. Winners include: (Plymouth store) Kim Edison, Lori Hight, Melissa Hopson, Vicki Fireline, Rachel Hayes, Sandy Bacewic, Jill Niedlinger, Linda Williams, Amanda Murray, Tracy Partridge, (Logansport store) Barb Lombardi, Madeline Tocco, Julie Schafer, Kim Russell, Margo Sears, Brenda Abbbot, and April Campbell.

More than 100 sons and daughters entered the holiday event sponsored by radio stations U93 FM, WLHM-FM, WTCA-AM, and WZHR-FM. Winning entries like this one, “My mother’s knot lazy; she gets up at 5:00 a.m. and works well past midnight. My mother’s knot perfect, but she gives 150% in everything she does. She works harder than anyone else I know, and I know that she loves me and my brothers and sister in that perfect, gentle, special way that only she can,” tugged at the judges’ heartstrings.

Fernbaugh’s mission is to celebrate special moments and establish meaningful relationships through exceptional customer service as well as continual community dedication. Lori’s husband Brian remarked, “How better to get to know our neighbors than through this meaningful interaction for Mother’s Day?”

This year’s campaign included outdoor billboards featuring Plymouth mother Ellen Stillson and her daughters and Logansport mother/daughter Shantel and Cassidy Cuppy. In-store posters featured mother/son Dot Taiclet and Don. Lori explained, “Our customers find it exciting to see people they know as our models – loyal customers themselves.” She continued, “We want our image to be fun, and find the billboards and posters create positive conversation about the store.” The theme, “Feeling Proud,” is another slogan that concentrates on the gift giving experience as a whole.

SETTING STONES

Jeweler says best teacher is experience by Dennis Forsberg Pharos -Tribune staff writer

Past all the sparkling jewelry in the front part of Fernbaugh's Jewelry Storer sits bench jeweler Brian VanDuyne. Sitting next to him is fellow bench jeweler Oris McGuire who has worked the same job for 46 years. While he did complete several classes to learn his trade, VanDuyne said the best teacher is hands-on experience. "There is so much they can tell you, but you actually have to do it," he said. "It helps to have someone beside you to fix your mistakes."

The jeweler, whose wife, Lori and brother-in-law Derek McGuire, co-own the store, said when he first started he had to learn not to use so much force, to avoid breaking things. Although every day is different, Van Duyne says he spends most of his time re-sizing rings or "tipping" the prongs that that hold the stones. Since the tips of the prongs wear down, the jeweler adds gold to ensure the stone stays in place.

Whether the ring is newly purchased or an older piece, the jeweler is able to re-size it right in the shop. When re-sizing, he uses what is called a blank, The blank measures from a size difference of 1/4 to two sizes. How much the ring needs to be re-sized determines which blank to use, he said.

After cutting out the appropriate amount, the ring is bent to form together again and is dipped in a boric acid and solution to prevent the gold from turning black when heated.

Next, VanDuyne welds the new ring together and files down the weld, he said. He then applies a flex staff, which smoothes the ring down and polishes it. Emery paper is used to file away scratches, and an ultra sound knocks out the rouse and removes any dirt. If the ring is older, VanDuyne prefers to use solder rather than welding.

Each piece of jewelry is different." he said. "You never know what someone else has done with it. You never know what you're working with when it comes to older jewelry." In addition, he also cleans and checks for loose diamonds on rings, replaces diamonds with bigger ones and anything else that might need to be fixed. The jeweler can also do remounting, if someone gets tired of their ring, he can put a stone in a different setting. "The majority of repairs are rings because they take the most abuse," he said. Depending on what type of work is being done, a repair can be completed in anywhere from 10 minutes to a full day.

The jeweler works with mostly gold, but has used platinum also. His favorite thing to do though is bead setting. This consists of drilling a small hole into the gold and setting a diamond into the hole, he said. The majority of his day is spent in the back, but if there are not enough people on the floor, both bench jewelers sell the jewelry also. After 15 years of experience, VanDuyne says he has enjoyed his 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. job but says the hours can add up.

"We are closed on Monday but if work needs to be done we are usually here," he said, "We probably work 60-70 hours a week." Working on jewelry day after day can leave it's mark, he said. "My fingers are usually black even if they are washed," VanDuyne said. "It takes two weeks of vacation to come out."

FERNBAUGH’S GIVES BACK TO COMMUNITY VIA MARSHALL COUNTY NEIGHBORHOOD CENTER

PLYMOUTH, Indiana - Fernbaugh’s Diamonds & Fine Jewelry in downtown Plymouth raised $900 during the month of January from watch battery sales, sizing, and repairs of which one hundred percent was donated to Marshall County Neighborhood Center. Owner Brian VanDuyne foresees this donation to become an annual giving each January, “Picking an organization that will benefit from our contribution and use the funds wisely to further their mission.” He continued, “We aligned ourselves to help the Neighborhood Center this year understanding their needs to be great and diverse.”

Marshall County Neighborhood Center has provided goods and services to people in need for twenty-five years - celebrating its silver anniversary in 2007. It averages six hundred clients per month addressing the needs of the underprivileged and working poor in Marshall County. Support programs include clothing, furniture, appliances, household goods, food pantry, and toys. The Center, which is a United Way Agency, offers credit counseling and income tax preparation for more than 120 lower income residents at no charge through volunteer accountants from the University of Notre Dame. Director Jerry McKetis stated, “We interact with Township Trustees, churches, and the other agencies in Marshall County for referrals for clients.” The Center’s obvious short term goal is to assist people in need. But Mr. McKetis said, “Our long-term goal is to help them become self-sufficient and independent.” For further information call (574) 936-3388.

In-store posters as well as an advertising campaign made citizens aware of Fernbaugh’s intent. Radio and newspaper ads declared, “It’s Fernbaugh’s time to donate and a way of joining you in giving back to the community.” The theme, “Feeling Generous” is another slogan within their master marketing plan. JOURNEY JEWELRY AVAILABLE AT FERNBAUGH’S

LOGANSPORT, Indiana - Fernbaugh’s Diamonds & Fine Jewelry introduces Journey Jewelry this holiday season.

The symbolic gift collection, trademarked “With every step love grows” and “For wherever love takes you,” had its national print and television campaign launched just two months ago featuring a couple’s personal story – love is a progression or evolution.

Diamond Trading Company (DTC) spokesperson Lynn Diamond, director of the Diamond Promotion Service said, “We expect it to generate over ten billion dollars in sales, surpassing even the three-stone campaign which has had an annual growth rate of nearly thirty-five percent per year since 2000.”

Specific characteristics of Journey Jewelry include at least four diamonds (and only diamonds) in varying sizes, graduated in placement to represent how love grows over time. At least one of the stones is significantly larger than the others. The hot new style includes pendants, earrings, bracelets, and brooches because these categories lend themselves to graduated-diamond designs. Metal choices range from 10k to 18k with 14k gold, white gold, or two tone being the most popular of all grades combining resiliency with shine. A wide variety of styles and prices accommodates all shoppers.

“It’s important to emphasize that this is not a diamond add-on concept,” said Richard Lennox, director-in-charge of the diamond marketing and advertising group at JWT, DCT’s marketing arm in the United States. “Each jewel is a complete piece where the entire ‘journey’ can be seen at once.” This concept is aimed at diamond jewelry buyers who might acquire a set of Journey earrings first and aspire to purchase a matching bracelet or pendant later.
